New Delhi, 13th Feb.
In the past, there have been numerous disputes between Asim Munir, the Chief of the Pakistan Army, and Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister. Imran Khan had done everything in his power to marginalize Asim Munir throughout his tenure. Nevertheless, Munir rejoined the Shahbaz Administration. Asim Munir, the Army Chief, exerted every effort to defeat Imran Khan in the recent general elections held on February 8th. In Pakistan’s general elections, which were held on February 8, no party appears to be winning a majority. There were 265 National Assembly elections for which elections were held. Until late February 9, the results for 245 seats had been announced.

The results that have been announced show that independent candidates have won up to 99 seats. Out of them, 91 are thought to have Imran’s support. In parallel, the PPP, an ally of Nawaz Sharif, has gained 52 seats and the PML-N, 69 seats.

Nevertheless, a lot of these videos—in which the outcomes are purportedly manipulated—are becoming widely popular on social media. Allegations have been made that the army is involved in this manipulation. It is a matter of concern that the animosity that Imran Khan has with the Army Chief is impeding his ability to meet with the Prime Minister.

A struggle for supremacy between Asim Munir and Imran Khan

Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir has been attempting to position himself as the leader who will revive the country’s economy ever since he assumed office. He will combat terrorists and will represent the nation’s foreign policy from a more diplomatic stance and act as a political shield.

Army Chief Asim Munir was instrumental in getting Imran Khan arrested in order to preserve his political clout. In addition, he chose to disband Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party since the army had been incited by PTI against Munir on multiple occasions.

They are ardent rivals to one another

The animosity between Imran Khan and Asim Munir is quite old. However, that was the open period of contention between Asim Munir and Imran Khan. Asim Munir was unofficially dismissed from his position as Director General of Intelligence (DG ISI) in June 2019, while Imran Khan was Prime Minister. According to the report, Imran Khan was upset that Asim Munir had exposed his wife to acts of corruption.

Imran Khan considered Asim Munir’s action to be audacious. Efforts were made by Imran Khan to prevent Asim Munir from taking over as Army Chief. Unfortunately, Imran Khan was unsuccessful.

Asim Munir was set to take over as Army Chief because he was the most senior member of the soldiers. However, Imran Khan extended his offer of service to General Bajwa in order to shorten Munir’s odds for a few days. But by then, tensions had also grown between Imran Khan and General Bajwa.

Pakistan’s Army Chief is Asim Munir, who took over as chief after General Bajwa retired. Like General Bajwa, the army operated in neutrality and avoided politics under Asim Munir’s direction. This was Imran Khan’s warning that the army would not stand with him any longer. Regarding the selection of the new Director General (DG) of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Imran Khan and the Pakistani Army publicly disagreed. Imran Khan was not successful in getting Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed appointed as the head of the ISI in front of the army. Additionally, Pakistan’s ISI Chief was appointed in November 2021 by Lieutenant General Nadeem Anjum.

Nawaz Sharif, the former Prime Minister, was summoned from London to defeat Imran Khan in the general elections. Asim Munir between Imran Khan and the PM’s chair. Imran Khan, on the one hand, received punishment in various situations. Shortly after, Imran Khan was granted bail in a legal matter and was released from custody. Meanwhile, in another case, he would have been immediately arrested.  Imran Khan’s PTI party emblem was immobilized. The case filed against Nawaz Sharif was closed concurrently, in order to allow Nawaz Sharif to run for office.

Despite this, Imran Khan is so well-liked in Pakistan that his endorsed candidates received a great deal of support even in the absence of his election campaign and party emblem. According to reports in Pakistani media on Thursday night, Imran-backed candidates were leading in more than 150 seats. Nevertheless, the outcomes abruptly changed on Friday morning.

Imran Khan had made serious allegations against the army

Imran Khan and the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) engaged in a protracted political struggle. Eleven political parties came together to form the Pakistan Democratic Movement in September 2020 as an opposition to the Imran Khan administration. The PPP and PML, Pakistan’s two bitterest rival parties, came together in this movement. This movement arose from claims that the general elections in Pakistan in 2018 were rigged. The 2018 general election was won by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, led by Imran Khan. Ultimately, a no-confidence motion in Imran Khan led to his removal from office in April 2022.

A motion of no confidence was used to remove Imran Khan from office as Pakistan’s Prime Minister for the first time. Imran Khan stepped up his attacks against the army after being overthrown. He effectively created a front against the army through his remarks and social media posts.

During a May 2022 rally, Imran Khan leveled several grave accusations against Major General Faisal Naseer, an ISI officer employed by the Pakistani Army. According to Imran Khan, Faisal Naseer made two attempts to murder him. The Pakistan Army harshly criticized Imran Khan in a statement following these accusations. According to the Pakistani Army, the Former Prime Minister of the nation, Imran Khan, made this extremely careless and unfounded accusation. Imran Khan’s arrest is thought to have occurred because he allegedly crossed the line by implicating the army officer in the murder.
