Parliamentary Panel Highlights Delays in Telemetry System Installation for Flood Forecasting

New Delhi, 27th July. A parliamentary committee has flagged delays in installing crucial telemetry systems used for real-time data collection and flood forecasting in flood-prone areas. The report, presented to the 17th Lok Sabha and tabled in the 18th Lok Sabha on Friday, stresses the need for immediate action to improve flood management.

According to the audit, installation was completed at all but three stations: Khanabal under the Chenab division, and Sara Thang and Dambong under the Gangtok division. Delays at Khanabal are due to a court case pending since 2018, while non-clearance from the forest department has stalled installations at Sara Thang and Dambong since 2017.

The Union Ministry of Jal Shakti reported that an alternative location for Khanabal has been identified, with installation expected to begin soon. Despite this, the committee expressed dissatisfaction with the prolonged delays.

The report emphasizes the critical role of telemetry stations in collecting real-time data, formulating flood forecasts, and disseminating information. It urges swift action to complete installations in Sikkim and other pending areas, recommending regular inspections and maintenance of all telemetry systems nationwide.

The committee also called for a comprehensive action plan to handle worst-case scenarios and enhance quick-response measures during floods, recognizing India’s diverse topography and unpredictable natural calamities.
