PM Modi and EAM Jaishankar Mourn Passing of Sri Lankan Tamil Leader R. Sampanthan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday expressed deep condolences on the demise of veteran Sri Lankan Tamil leader R. Sampanthan.

PM Modi took to social media platform X to share his heartfelt memories of interactions with Sampanthan, stating, “My deepest condolences to the family and friends of veteran TNA leader R. Sampanthan. Will always cherish fond memories of meetings with him.” He praised Sampanthan for his unwavering commitment to peace, security, equality, justice, and dignity for Sri Lankan Tamils, highlighting his significant impact in both Sri Lanka and India.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reflected on his longstanding association with Sampanthan, remarking, “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing away of Sri Lankan Tamil leader Shri R. Sampanthan. Recall my many meetings and conversations with him over several decades.” Jaishankar acknowledged Sampanthan’s lifelong dedication to advocating for the rights and welfare of Tamil communities in Sri Lanka, extending condolences to his family and followers.

R. Sampanthan, aged 91, passed away at a private hospital in Colombo, as reported by Dailymirror, where he had been undergoing treatment. His political career spanned several decades, including terms as a Member of Parliament from 1977 to 1983 and again from 1997 to 2000. He played a pivotal role as the leader of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) from its inception in 2001, advocating for Tamil rights and serving as the opposition leader from 2015 to 2018.
