Prime Minister Narendra Modi seized on the vote jihad comment made by Congress leader Salman Khurshid’s niece Maria Alam, stating that she had revealed the strategy of the INDIA bloc for the current Lok Sabha election.

The INDIA alliance has encouraged Muslims to engage in Vote Jihad. This directive came from an educated family, not from a child from a Madrasa. The INDIA alliance is urging all Muslims to unite and vote. The Prime Minister criticized this move, calling it an insult to democracy and the Constitution, during a rally in Gujarat’s Anand.

The Prime Minister emphasized that no Congress leader had denounced the statement yet, suggesting a silent agreement. He pointed out that while the INDIA alliance is attempting to divide different categories of people, they are also promoting Vote Jihad, indicating their dangerous intentions.

The Prime Minister’s response followed Maria Alam’s call for Muslim voters to launch a vote jihad during a rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad, where she was campaigning for a Samajwadi Party candidate.

Uttar Pradesh police have filed a case against Maria Alam for inciting enmity between classes, among other charges, and a case has also been registered against Mr. Khurshid, who was present at the event.

When asked about his niece’s statement, Mr. Khurshid explained that he avoids certain words in public speeches due to misinterpretation. He clarified that jihad means to fight against a situation, and Maria Alam’s intention was likely to carry out vote jihad to protect the Constitution.

Senior police officer Vikas Kumar stated that Maria Alam’s video asking for votes on religious grounds violates the Model Code of Conduct.

The Farrukhabad Lok Sabha seat is being contested by the Samajwadi Party as part of its agreement with the Congress in Uttar Pradesh. The seat, currently held by the BJP, will see polling on May 13.

In a separate attack on the Congress and Rahul Gandhi, the Prime Minister accused the Opposition party of being in cahoots with Pakistan. He claimed that the Congress used to provide dossiers to terrorists, while his government takes action against them. He alleged a partnership between Pakistan and Congress, citing a video shared by a former Pakistan minister of Rahul Gandhi.
