New Delhi, 18th August. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Paetongtarn Shinawatra on her election as the Prime Minister of Thailand. He expressed his eagerness to work with her to further enhance the diplomatic ties between India and Thailand.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, took office after receiving a royal endorsement, two days after Thailand’s Parliament selected her to replace her predecessor, who was removed by a court order.

In a message on X, Modi said: “Congratulations @ingshin on your election as the Prime Minister of Thailand. Best wishes for a very successful tenure. Look forward to working with you to further strengthen the bilateral ties between India and Thailand, that are based on the strong foundations of civilisational, cultural and people-to-people connect.”

Paetongtarn becomes the third Shinawatra to hold the top position in Thailand, following in the footsteps of her father Thaksin and her aunt Yingluck Shinawatra, both of whom were ousted by military coups and forced into exile. Thaksin returned to Thailand last year as the Pheu Thai Party formed a new government.

Paetongtarn received her appointment in a ceremony at Pheu Thai’s headquarters in Bangkok, accompanied by senior party members and her father, who, though he holds no formal role, is seen as the de facto leader of the party. The father and daughter entered the event hand in hand, both dressed in white civil servants’ uniforms, symbolizing their participation in the royal and state ceremonies.
