New Delhi, 27th July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Indian weightlifter Raja Muthupandi for winning the silver medal in the men’s 65 kg weightlifting event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, describing the achievement as a moment of pride for the nation.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Another medal for India in Weightlifting! Congrats to Raja Muthupandi on winning a Silver in the Men’s 65 kg event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. His success makes every Indian happy and proud. My best wishes for his upcoming endeavours.”
The 26-year-old weightlifter produced an impressive performance by lifting 126 kg in the snatch and 160 kg in the clean and jerk, registering a combined total of 286 kg to secure the silver medal. Malaysia’s Aznil Bidin claimed the gold with a Commonwealth Games record total of 299 kg.
Muthupandi’s medal was India’s third medal in weightlifting at the Glasgow Games and completed a memorable day for the Indian contingent in the sport. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu created history by winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, while Rishikanta Singh also secured a silver in the men’s 60 kg category.
The silver medal further underlined India’s traditional strength in weightlifting and contributed to the country’s growing medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026, where Indian lifters have made a strong start to the competition.
