PM Modi Extends His Condolences Over Demise of Mikhail Gorbachev

New Delhi, 1st September. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief on the demise of H.E. Mikhail Gorbachev.

The PM tweeted, “I extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of H.E. Mr. Mikhail Gorbachev, one of the leading statesmen of the 20th century who left an indelible mark on the course of history. We recall and value his contribution to strengthening relations with India.”

Gorbachev died on Tuesday at the age of 91 in a Moscow hospital after a “serious and prolonged illness,” according to Russian media. His death prompted an outpouring of condolences and tributes from world leaders.

Gorbachev led the Soviet Union from 1985 until its collapse in 1991. He visited India twice, in 1986 and 1988.

Gorbachev received the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating a historic nuclear arms treaty with then-US President Ronald Reagan.
