Kyiv, 23rd August. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India’s commitment to resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine through “dialogue and diplomacy,” said External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. During a media briefing, Jaishankar emphasized Modi’s readiness to contribute in every possible way to facilitate peace negotiations.

The discussion also touched upon Modi’s recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Moscow in July. Jaishankar stated, “It is India’s view that the two sides need to engage with each other to find a solution.”

PM Modi is currently on a historic visit to Ukraine, marking the first time an Indian prime minister has traveled to the country since it gained independence in 1991. His visit is viewed as a landmark moment, given that India and Ukraine established diplomatic relations in 1992. Modi arrived in Kyiv via a special train and was welcomed by the First Deputy Foreign Minister at the railway station. He also met with the Indian community in Ukraine.

The Prime Minister’s visit is particularly significant as Ukraine’s forces intensify their incursion into Russia’s Kursk region while Moscow’s army makes advances in eastern Ukraine. Modi’s journey from Poland to Kyiv, which lasted nearly 10 hours, underscores the importance of the visit amid the ongoing conflict.

In Kyiv, Modi met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Mariinsky Palace, where they held a delegation-level meeting. Modi, who is seen as a potential peacemaker due to India’s historically strong ties with Russia, also paid homage to the memory of children who have been affected by the war. He visited the Martyrologist exposition on Children in Kyiv, reaffirming his earlier statement from Moscow about the unbearable pain of seeing innocent children suffer.

The United Nations reports that over 10,000 civilians have died in Ukraine since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022, with the actual number likely being much higher.
