Qasim Khan, the Deputy Speaker of the Pakistan National Assembly, resigns ahead of a no-confidence motion

GG News Bureau,
New Delhi, 16th  April.
On Saturday, Qasim Khan Suri resigned as deputy speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly, less than an hour before a session of the House was to vote on a no-trust motion against him for favoring the previous government led by Imran Khan.

Suri, a member of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, had been serving as acting speaker since Speaker Asad Qaiser resigned on April 9 due to his inability to hold a vote of no-confidence against Khan. Suri, who shared a copy of his resignation on Twitter, stated that his decision represented his affiliation with the vision of his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), and democracy.
“We will never, ever jeopardise Pakistan’s sovereignty and integrity. We will fight for the interests and independence of the country. We will go to any length to safeguard Pakistan “The 53-year-old politician took to Twitter. Following Suri’s resignation, the no-confidence motion has no effect, and the newly-elected speaker will decide whether or not to accept the resignation, according to Geo TV.

Suri has come under fire in recent days for his contentious April 3 ruling to dismiss a no-confidence motion against former Prime Minister Khan, as well as his decision to postpone the session scheduled for the election of the NA speaker from April 16 to April 22.
On the eve of Shehbaz Sharif’s election as Pakistan’s new prime minister on April 11, former Prime Minister Khan’s party lawmakers decided to resign from the National Assembly.

Suri accepted the resignations of 123 lawmakers on Thursday, according to Khan’s PTI, and the National Assembly (NA) Secretariat also issued a notification on the matter.
Suri, according to the PPP and the PML-N, put pressure on the National Assembly Secretariat to accept the resignations. According to National Assembly rules, the assembly will elect a deputy speaker immediately after the speaker is elected, and once elected, he will take an oath before the assembly before taking office. Another coalition partner, Shahida Akhtar Ali of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl, is said to be a frontrunner for the position of deputy speaker.
