Mumbai, 7th Dec.
In an Instagram post, Ratan Tata, the veteran industrialist and former Chairman of Tata Group, raised awareness about a fake interview that was being used on social media to promote investments with false claims of being risk-free and guaranteed.

Tata specifically mentioned a post by a user named Sona Agrawal, who had shared a video containing the fake interview where Tata falsely referred to Agrawal as his manager.

The video displayed individuals receiving money in their accounts. Tata labeled the video and its caption as fake.

The government recently held a meeting with social media platforms to discuss their progress in addressing the issue of deepfakes.

The platforms were informed that the 11 user harms or illegalities identified in the IT rules are also covered by corresponding provisions in the Indian Penal Code, meaning there are criminal consequences under current laws.

Minister of State for IT and Electronics Rajeev Chandrasekhar previously met with social media representatives and gave them seven days to take action on deep fakes.

A follow-up meeting was held to assess progress, with some platforms complying and others given more time.

The government maintains a zero tolerance approach to user harm and expects platforms to ensure users are aware of illegal activities.

Platforms were reminded that criminal consequences exist for such harms under existing laws, with forgery being one example.
A final meeting will be held in seven days to evaluate the situation.

“No platform used to doing nothing about harm would like to be told that we are going to take a ‘zero tolerance approach’ to harm… Ones that are slower (to act), we have given them some more time but we have certainly not given them any feeling that we are going to relax the government’s approach in making internet safe and trusted for all Indians,” the source said.
