Kolkata, 12th August.
The principal of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, resigned today amid massive protests following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor on campus late Thursday. Dr. Ghosh cited “humiliation” on social media and political statements made in his name as reasons for his resignation.

Dr. Ghosh, who has faced allegations of victim blaming in the wake of the tragic incident, denied making any such remarks. “Students are being provoked to ensure my removal. I want the accused to be punished. I am being defamed. I have not made such remarks,” he told the media. He added, “The girl who died was like my daughter. I am also a parent. As a parent, I am resigning.”

As an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Ghosh stated that he can continue to earn his livelihood elsewhere, and emphasized his commitment to honesty and anti-corruption efforts during his tenure. “Everyone thought Sandip Ghosh cannot resign. I am honest. After I took over, I cracked down on corruption. I have worked for the development of the hospital and in the interest of the patients,” he said.

Earlier, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari had publicly criticized Dr. Ghosh, calling for his suspension. Adhikari accused him of making misleading statements and displaying a “carefree attitude” in the aftermath of the incident, suggesting that individuals close to the principal might be involved and that the investigation was being rushed to protect them.

The 31-year-old doctor was found dead on Friday morning in the seminar hall of the state-run hospital. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who frequented the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the crime. The incident has ignited nationwide protests by doctors, demanding justice for the victim and accountability from the authorities.
