Panaji, 9th April: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday called upon lawmakers to rise above political differences and serve citizens with integrity, emphasising that public trust must remain the cornerstone of governance.
Speaking at the inauguration of the First Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Zone VII Conference in Goa, Birla highlighted that elected representatives carry the responsibility of translating people’s aspirations into meaningful action while strengthening democratic institutions.
He underlined that integrity, transparency, and commitment to public welfare are essential to building a developed and self-reliant India.
Focusing on youth leadership, Birla said young lawmakers have a crucial role in achieving the vision of a developed India by 2047. He noted that their energy and innovative thinking can drive inclusive growth and institutional strength.
The Speaker also called for healthy competition among state legislatures, stating that such an approach can improve governance standards and promote public welfare. He pointed out that India’s parliamentary democracy continues to gain strength, reflected in steadily rising voter turnout since 1952.
Highlighting the role of technology, Birla stressed that while tools like Artificial Intelligence are transforming governance, human sensitivity remains equally important. He urged legislators to stay connected with people and address their concerns with empathy.
Emphasising legislative effectiveness, he said greater familiarity with parliamentary rules and procedures leads to more meaningful participation in debates and policymaking.
Birla also praised Goa’s cultural vibrancy and tourism appeal, while noting that the newly formed CPA Zone VII—comprising Maharashtra, Goa, and Gujarat—can serve as a model of cooperative governance by sharing best practices, particularly in coastal development.
The event was also addressed by Harivansh Narayan Singh, Pramod Sawant, Ram Shinde, and Rahul Narvekar.
Goa Assembly Speaker Ganesh Gaonkar delivered the welcome address, while Deputy Speaker Joshua D’Souza proposed the vote of thanks.
