Samajwadi Party Vows to Scrap Agnipath Scheme if Elected

Lucknow, 27th July. In a firm statement on Saturday, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav reiterated his party’s commitment to cancel the Agnipath scheme if they come to power.

Yadav’s remarks came a day after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a reservation policy for retired Agniveers in state police and the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC).

Yadav, who has consistently opposed the short-term military recruitment scheme during the Lok Sabha election campaign, stated on X, “As soon as we come to power, the short-term ‘Agniveer’ military recruitment that compromises the security of the country and plays with the future of the soldiers will be cancelled within 24 hours.” He further emphasized his demand for reinstating the old recruitment model.

The Agnipath scheme, introduced by the Centre in 2022, recruits youths aged 17-and-a-half to 21 into the Army, Navy, and Air Force on a four-year contractual basis. Recruits, known as Agniveers, face the possibility of regular service for 25 percent of their batch after their tenure.

In response to the scheme, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs had reserved 10 percent of vacancies in Central Armed Police Forces for ex-Agniveers. Several state governments also followed suit, creating similar reservations for their police forces.
