Imphal, 9th August.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh addressed concerns on Thursday regarding the evacuation of people from Churachandpur and Moreh to Imphal Valley following the outbreak of violence in May last year.Singh explained that his government took immediate action on the night of May 3, when violence erupted, moving affected individuals to safer locations such as Assam Rifles camps and the Secretariat. The decision to evacuate, he said, was driven by the need to prioritize safety amid mounting pressure and cries for help.

He defended the government’s actions amidst questions about the shifting of people between Churachandpur, Moreh, and Imphal Valley. Singh emphasized that failure to evacuate could have led to greater risks and frustration.

The Chief Minister criticized those attempting to undermine the peace process, noting that violence and arson continued despite peace initiatives in Jiribam district. He reported recent signs of improvement, including the return of 133 displaced individuals to Jiribam and efforts to facilitate the return of others.

Since the outbreak of ethnic violence between the Meiteis of Imphal Valley and the Kukis of the hills, more than 200 people have been killed and thousands displaced. Singh’s comments aim to clarify the government’s response and ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability.
