New Delhi, 27th Oct: The Supreme Court has deferred hearing a batch of petitions challenging the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI), including allegations that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar took key decisions unilaterally, particularly in connection with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant postponed the hearing after Senior Advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for petitioner Rakesh Singh, sought time to file a rejoinder to the ECI’s response, which was received only the previous night.
The Court granted the petitioner 10 days to submit the reply. The matter is likely to be listed on November 17 or later, after the required period and the Diwali vacation.
Petitioners Raise Questions Over ECI Decisions
The petitions allege that certain decisions concerning the Commission’s functioning were taken unilaterally by CEC Gyanesh Kumar, despite the petitioners’ contention that such matters required unanimous decisions.
The challenge focuses particularly on the SIR exercise, which has prompted debate over electoral-roll revision and the Election Commission’s decision-making process.
The Supreme Court will consider the matter after the petitioner files a response to the ECI’s submissions. The allegations remain part of the pending legal challenge.
