SC Grills Ramdev and Balkrishna Over Apology Size Amid Misleading Ads Case

New Delhi, 23rd April.
The Supreme Court’s proceedings today dug into the size and sincerity of apologies issued by Patanjali Ayurved’s founders, Ramdev and Balkrishna, amidst the ongoing case concerning misleading advertisements by the company.

Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Ramdev and Balkrishna, informed the court of a fresh set of apologies submitted, prompting scrutiny from the bench. Justices questioned the timing and visibility of the apologies, emphasizing their concern over the apologies’ prominence compared to the company’s advertising efforts.

Justice Hima Kohli raised doubts about the sincerity of the apologies, pressing for assurances that they were not merely token gestures. The court’s skepticism extended to an application seeking a hefty fine against the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which it suspected might be a proxy plea.

As the court adjourned the hearing for a week, Ramdev pledged to publish a more conspicuous apology in newspapers. However, Justice Kohli stressed that the court demanded actual-sized apologies, not enlarged versions, indicating a desire for transparency and earnestness.

Earlier, Patanjali Ayurved preempted the hearing by issuing an apology in national dailies, expressing respect for the court and acknowledging past mistakes. This move followed the court’s criticism of previous apologies as insincere and insufficient.

The legal battle stems from Patanjali’s claims during the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly regarding its drug Coronil. Disputes arose over the drug’s efficacy and certification, escalating tensions between Patanjali and the medical community. The Supreme Court intervened following persistent misinformation, warning of severe consequences for non-compliance with its orders.

Despite previous warnings and assurances from Patanjali’s counsel, the company’s continued disregard for advertising regulations prompted the court to demand accountability directly from Ramdev and Balkrishna.
