New Delhi, 9th April.
The Supreme Court on Monday issued a scathing rebuke to the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) over its treatment of a woman officer and ordered her re-induction into the force. The woman officer, Priyanka Tyagi, was discharged as a short service commission officer in 2021, prompting the court to intervene and demand her reinstatement.

A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrahud criticized the ICG for resisting the grant of permanent commission to women officers, emphasizing the need to end discrimination in the armed forces.

Referring to previous verdicts on permanent commission for women officers in the Army, Air Force, and Navy, the court underscored the importance of gender equality.

Expressing dismay at the treatment of women officers, the bench directed the ICG to re-induct Priyanka Tyagi into her former position and assigned her a significant posting matching her qualifications.

Additionally, the court transferred Tyagi’s plea from the Delhi High Court to itself, ensuring direct oversight of the case.

The Attorney General, R Venkataramani, defended the ICG’s position, citing institutional transitions and preparedness. However, the court reiterated its commitment to gender equality and urged the government to implement policies that treat women fairly.

The Supreme Court’s intervention highlights the ongoing struggle for gender equality within the armed forces and reinforces the judiciary’s role as a guardian of fundamental rights and equality before the law.
