New Delhi, 3rd May.
The Supreme Court has stepped in to prevent the opening of a road outside Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s residence in Chandigarh. The decision, announced today, was made in response to concerns raised by both the Centre and the Punjab government about security threats related to the road’s opening.

A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta observed that both the Centre and the Punjab government have objected to the road’s opening, which has been closed since the 1980s due to security concerns.

The road was closed during the peak of terrorism in Punjab and was scheduled to be reopened on a trial basis.

On April 22, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had ordered the opening of the 500-meter road, connecting Sukhna Lake to Nayagaon in Chandigarh, on a trial basis starting from May 1.

The High Court’s order also required the Chandigarh Police to work with traffic experts to create a comprehensive traffic management plan for the road, which was planned to be open from 7 am to 7 pm on weekdays.

Since the road’s closure, people traveling between Nayagaon and Sukhna Lake had to take longer routes through other parts of the city.
