Security Forces Destroy Militant Bunkers After Rocket Attacks in Manipur’s Bishnupur

Imphal, 7th Sept. Security forces have destroyed three bunkers in Manipur’s Churachandpur district following rocket attacks by militants in neighboring Bishnupur, which killed one person and injured six others, according to a police statement.

The operation was carried out on Friday in the villages of Mualsang and Laika Mualsau. Militants had launched long-range rockets targeting civilians in Bishnupur, leading to the death of a senior citizen and injuries to six other civilians. Following the attacks, police teams and additional security forces conducted combing operations in nearby hill ranges.

“Two bunkers in Mualsang and one in Laika Mualsau were destroyed,” the statement said. The Bishnupur Superintendent of Police and other officials were fired upon by suspected militants, but the security forces retaliated and repelled the attack.

A military helicopter has been deployed for aerial surveillance, and high-level security meetings are being held to assess the law and order situation. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, with the police on alert for any potential contingencies.

The rocket attacks followed earlier drone strikes earlier this week, where bombs were dropped on civilians in Imphal West district. These high-tech assaults have added to the growing tension in Imphal Valley, where ethnic violence since May last year has claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands.

On Friday night, residents in peripheral areas of Bishnupur and Imphal East districts turned off their lights after multiple drones were sighted, creating panic. Drones were spotted in areas including Narainsena, Nambol Kamong, Pukhao, Dolaithabi, and Shantipur.
