Sena Disqualification Row: SC Asserts Maharashtra Speaker “Cannot Defeat the Orders”

New Delhi, 13th Oct. The Supreme Court criticized the Maharashtra assembly speaker for the delay in deciding the plea for disqualification of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and several MLAs. The court stated that the speaker cannot defy the orders of the Supreme Court.

“Somebody has to advise the Speaker that he cannot defeat the orders of the Supreme Court,” a bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud said and asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to apprise the court about the timeline for deciding the issue.

The Chief Justice, visibly annoyed, emphasized that the decision on disqualification must be made before the next assembly elections to avoid rendering the process ineffective.

The court warned that if it is not satisfied with the timeline provided by the speaker, it will direct that a decision be made within two months.

The court also indicated that it may hear the plea on Monday or Tuesday.

On September 18, the Supreme Court had instructed the Maharashtra assembly speaker to specify the timeline for resolving the disqualification petitions against Shinde and other MLAs.
