New Delhi, 11th April.
Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani on Wednesday welcomed the Calcutta High Court’s order for a CBI investigation into allegations of crimes against women and land encroachment in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali. Irani termed this as a crucial step towards delivering justice to the affected individuals.

The high court specified that it would oversee the investigation and instructed the CBI to submit a detailed report on the supposed illegal conversion of agricultural land into water bodies for fish farming after reviewing revenue records and physically inspecting the land in question.

“I support the court’s decision. This is the initial move towards providing justice to the women of Sandeshkhali, especially those who are economically disadvantaged,” Irani told reporters.

Shahjahan Sheikh, a prominent figure in the Trinamool Congress, is a key suspect in the assault and land grabbing cases in Sandeshkhali. He was apprehended in February for attacking Enforcement Directorate officials during a raid on January 5 related to a ration distribution scam investigation.

Following his arrest, the TMC suspended Sheikh promptly.

Irani accused Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of shielding Sheikh instead of upholding the Constitution. Irani believes Banerjee will now have to answer to the people of the state.

“I am thankful to the court for its ruling,” Irani stated, expressing confidence that the BJP’s West Bengal division will assist the victims of the Sandeshkhali case in obtaining justice.

Priyanka Tibrewal, a lawyer and petitioner, submitted approximately 600 complaints in the form of affidavits to the Calcutta High Court, detailing alleged atrocities, land seizures, assaults, and property damage.
