Bardhaman, 13th March.
Union Minister Smriti Irani has voiced her support for the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019, stating that it is a “correct” decision by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Despite protests from opposition parties, Irani claimed that the entire country backs the initiative.

Speaking to the media in Bengal’s Bardhaman, Irani emphasized that the CAA fulfills Prime Minister Modi’s pledge to grant citizenship to persecuted minorities such as Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

Criticism against the CAA has been mounting, particularly from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who accused the Modi government of using the act as an election tactic. Banerjee alleged that applying for citizenship under the CAA would unfairly label individuals as “illegal migrants.”

The CAA, linked to the National Register of Citizens (NRC), has sparked concerns about its legality and implications for individuals applying for citizenship. Banerjee highlighted incidents in Assam and Manipur, questioning the government’s transparency and accusing the BJP of targeting certain communities.

The Union Home Ministry’s recent notification of CAA rules has further intensified the debate surrounding the controversial legislation. Passed by Parliament in 2019, the CAA aims to provide Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from neighboring countries who arrived in India before December 31, 2014.

Despite the ongoing controversy and opposition, the Modi government remains steadfast in its implementation of the CAA, asserting its commitment to protecting persecuted minorities and fulfilling its electoral promises.
