Special Camps to Be Organized in 4 Districts of TN to Settle Insurance Claims Once Floodwaters Recede, Says FM

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday that a special camp was held in Chennai to quickly settle claims by general insurance companies in areas affected by cyclone Michaung.

Similar efforts will also be made in four districts of Tamil Nadu that were impacted by excessive rains and floods. These districts include Tirunelveli, Toothukudi, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi.

Once the water recedes in these districts, insurance companies will organize special camps to settle claims caused by the floods.
The General Insurance Council of India, along with 19 insurers, organized a special camp on December 20-21 in Chennai to expedite the settlement of claims related to the cyclone.

Spot settlements were made after surveying the affected industrial units. So far, 31 people have lost their lives in the four districts, and a total of 73,574 hectares of agricultural crop area and 35,796 hectares of horticulture area have been affected by heavy rainfall from December 16-19.

In terms of rescue operations, various forces have completed 87 sorties in the flood-affected areas.

The central government has already released Rs 900 crore as the central share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) in two installments for use in this financial year in Tamil Nadu.

Further assistance from the central government will be provided based on the assessment of the Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT), which departed to the flood-affected districts on December 19.
