PM Modi’s Oath Ceremony on Sunday

Narendra Modi will be inaugurated for an unprecedented third term as Prime Minister following the BJP-led NDA coalition’s victory in the recent Lok Sabha elections. The BJP and its allies officially selected the 73-year-old leader at a crucial meeting in Delhi, a day after the election results were announced. Various South Asian leaders have been invited to the event, with confirmations from Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Invitations have also been extended to Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, and Mauritius PM Pravind Jugnauth.

In previous ceremonies, leaders of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries attended PM Modi’s first swearing-in in 2014, and leaders from BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) countries were present in 2019.

Historic Third Term

PM Modi becomes the second Indian leader to secure a third consecutive term, following India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections saw the BJP’s seat count reduce to 240 from 303 in 2019, while the BJP-led NDA coalition’s total decreased from 352 to 293 seats, still above the 272 majority mark.

To form the government, PM Modi and the BJP are relying on their coalition partners, with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal United (JDU) being the major allies, securing 16 and 12 seats, respectively.
