New Delhi, 8th April. There have been attempts to determine if Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal can continue to serve as Chief Minister while incarcerated ever since he was taken to the ED.
Kejriwal is aware that he cannot lead the government, but he may hold the position of Chief Minister while incarcerated. The entire issue will be brought before the Lieutenant Governor (LG) in such a case. Whether there has been a malfunction in the constitutional machinery will be determined by the LG. In such cases, the LG may remove the PM or order him to designate a new leader for his legislative party, designating him as either a caretaker or a permanent CM. A capable individual to assume the responsibilities of the Chief Minister position will be required in such a scenario. Having Arvind Kejriwal’s trust is his first and last requirement.
It has become abundantly evident in the last few days that Kejriwal does not trust any of his party’s leaders. He never stops attempting to portray his wife Sunita Kejriwal as Delhi’s next Chief Minister and to portray her in that light. Moreover, Sunita Kejriwal is doing it swiftly. Atishi Singh and Saurabh Bhardwaj, two Ministers for the Aam Aadmi Party, have been rather visible in the media during the past few days. He has now faded into obscurity. Primarily, Sunita Kejriwal leads. During the opposition party rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi, Sunita Kejriwal was also spotted sitting on the stage with Sonia Gandhi. In addition, she has been introduced to the world via video messages featuring Arvind Kejriwal’s words from jail, as well as earlier ones from ED custody.
He made a small alteration to his message on Thursday. It should be noted that the message’s video was shot with a modified background rather than the message itself. Previously, she would talk while seated in the same chair as Arvind Kejriwal. There are Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s and Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar’s respective photos at the back of her. In addition to these two, a third image of Arvind Kejriwal behind prison was spotted as well. What point is being made? Is this an attempt to demonstrate that Arvind Kejriwal is on par with Dr. Ambedkar and Shaheed Bhagat Singh in terms of political stature? There are attempts to elevate his political profile. There’s an effort to portray him as a political martyr.
There’s an effort to play the helpless person. It is demonstrated that circumstances have led to Sunita Kejriwal being compelled to assume this duty.
It is unsure of Sunita K. Kejriwal’s chances of becoming Chief Minister. But because of the Aam Aadmi Party’s efforts and the course of events, the party’s leaders and MLAs have, in a sense, acknowledged her as a leader in Kejriwal’s presence. All three Aam Aadmi Party MLAs met Sunita Kejriwal a few days ago. However, the message that was conveyed afterward stated that Arvind Kejriwal, our Chief Minister, was, is, and will be forever. It is hardly up for debate whether Arvind Kejriwal will continue in his role as Chief Minister. It is quite unlikely that he will be able to continue as Chief Minister if the court does not grant him relief or release him on bond. It will be necessary for him to step down as Chief Minister. Thus, we require a new Chief Minister. In the unlikely event that Arvind Kejriwal and his party fail to elect a new Chief Minister and see the process through to completion, the Lieutenant Governor (LG) will be forced to impose President’s control in Delhi.
Where does Sunita Kejriwal stand politically?
There have been two previous cases where two Chief Ministers attempted to give their wives their inheritance. There are two: NT Rama Rao and Lalu Prasad Yadav. Lalu Prasad Yadav appointed Rabri Devi as the Chief Minister when he began serving time in jail. NT Rama Rao also attempted to pass on his political legacy to Lakshmi Parvati as his health declined. She is now serving as Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu has taken over this party. That party group ran in its first and ultimately its last election under the direction of Lakshmi Parvati. That was the end of her political career.
Rabri Devi was appointed as Bihar’s Chief Minister. Under her direction, the Rashtriya Janata Dal was able to secure an absolute majority on its own for the first time since its founding in the 1995 Bihar Assembly elections. Rabri Devi’s political career did not endure long in spite of that.
What is ahead for Sunita Kejriwal politically is the current question. This is very similar to Lakshmi Parvati and Rabri Devi. It doesn’t take long for either scenario to occur. Elections for the Delhi Assembly are scheduled for January 2025, although as of right now, they are in April 2024. The amount of evidence revealed, the type of money trail found, the witnesses, the proof found, and the solid case the ED has constructed against Arvind Kejriwal and his friends in the Delhi liquor scam are all impressive. Arvind Kejriwal might stay incarcerated until January 2025, when assembly elections are scheduled to take place. He needs a leader for the party who can be projected as the next Chief Minister in the elections, even if he doesn’t end up being the Chief Minister if he stays behind bars.
They are aware that while removing the current Chief Minister will be extremely tough, appointing a new leader will be relatively simple. There exist numerous instances in politics where an individual was appointed as Chief Minister or held another high position based on their perceived weakness, loyalty, or support, and then declined to resign. Indira Gandhi is the first person who comes to mind. She became the nation’s Prime Minister at the behest of the syndicate, who knew that she would submit to their authority and carry out their directives.
Parallel to this, after Bihar’s 2014 Lok Sabha elections were a huge blowout, Nitish Kumar appointed Jitan Ram Manjhi as Chief Minister. It was hardly a year and a quarter later that Nitish Kumar realized it was time to get rid of Jitan Ram Majhi. It took a lot of work for him to get rid of him. He has become somewhat of a rival to Nitish Kumar.
Nobody knows this better than Arvind Kejriwal: nobody demonstrates the level of loyalty that is expected of them when they are appointed to a position after taking office. It is well known to him that elevating a party leader to the position of Chief Minister will make things easier for him, but removing them will be quite challenging. Under such circumstances, an attempt will be made to fabricate a story about Sunita Kejriwal as a victim, a lady under persecution, whose husband was wrongfully accused in a fictitious case and imprisoned out of political vendetta. An attempt will be made to win people over. According to Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party, this card can be effective. However, there was no pity when Arvind Kejriwal was sentenced to prison. Not when he was arrested, not when he was placed in detention.
They will not receive sympathy from anyone, even if the court does not grant them any redress. However, as Sunita Kejriwal is a woman and Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, she is entitled to sympathy. Such hope is held by Arvind Kejriwal and his strategists. However, this is not how politics operate. Many leaders believe that serving time in prison improves their standing and broadens their network of support. On the other hand, these leaders are perceived as trustworthy, who feel as though they are being victimized. He was imprisoned after being connected to a political retaliation. They think they will undoubtedly win compassion. Its certainly not in the case of Arvind Kejriwal.
The people of Delhi have accepted that Arvind Kejriwal has done something wrong. There has been a liquor scam in Delhi. It is accepted that the people of Aam Aadmi Party have evolved in the liquor scam. The only thing is whether Arvind Kejriwal is also an equal stakeholder – on this issue people are not yet ready to give Arvind Kejriwal the benefit of doubt.
Now the question is that Sanjay Singh has been released from jail. In the seniority order of the party, he is at third place after Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia. Will Sanjay Singh become Sunita Kejriwal’s assistant, or will he become an obstacle. This question is yet to be resolved. Sanjay Singh may feel that this is the golden opportunity for him to take control of both the party and the government. In politics, ambition works ruthlessly when it awakens in a leader. Do not take Sanjay Singh’s visit to Arvind Kejriwal’s house after his release from prison and his touching of Sunita Kejriwal’s feet as evidence of his allegiance. He doesn’t want to come across as Sunita Kejriwal’s adversary or competitor right away. He will hence not say anything more until the subject of substitute plans is raised. When Arvind Kejriwal steps down as Chief Minister and a new leader is up for election, who will Sanjay Singh really be devoted to?
