Telecom Dept Warns E-commerce Platforms on Illegal Facilitation & Sale of Wireless Jammers

New Delhi, 4th July. On July 1, 2022, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, issued an advisory to the general public on the proper use of wireless jammers and booster/repeaters.

It has been stated that using a cellular signal jammer, GPS blocker, or other signal jamming device is generally illegal, unless explicitly allowed by the Government of India.

In India, private sector organisations and/or individuals are not permitted to purchase or use jammers.

It has also been stated that it is illegal in India to advertise, sell, distribute, import, or otherwise market signal jamming devices, except as permitted under the aforementioned guidelines.

It has been stated that it is illegal for any individual or entity other than licensed Telecom Service Providers to possess, sell, and/or use a mobile signal repeater/booster.

Previously, the DoT warned all e-commerce companies not to sell or facilitate the sale of wireless jammers on their online platforms in a notice dated 21 January. A copy of the above Notice was also sent to the Ministry of Commerce, the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and CBIC/Customs for action.
