Chennai, 11th May: Vijay made a striking political and visual statement during his swearing-in ceremony as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on Sunday, appearing in a sleek black suit instead of the traditional white shirt-and-dhoti attire associated with Tamil Nadu politics.
As Vijay entered Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for the oath-taking ceremony, supporters erupted in celebration, marking what many described as the actor-turned-politician’s biggest “blockbuster” moment in public life.
According to sources, Vijay had specially designed the black suit and kept it prepared once election trends showed the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerging as the single-largest party in the Assembly elections.
The choice of black also carried political symbolism in Tamil Nadu, where the colour has long been associated with the Dravidian movement led by Periyar EV Ramasamy.
Periyar supporters traditionally used black shirts and black flags as symbols of self-respect and resistance to traditional authority.
Vijay Sends Strong Political Message
Soon after taking oath, Vijay delivered a sharp political message, asserting that there would be no parallel power structure within his government.
“There will be no power centre other than me. I will be the only centre of power,” Vijay declared during his first speech as Chief Minister.
The statement was widely seen as an attempt to reassure the public that the TVK-led coalition government would not function under pressure from alliance partners.
Referring to himself as “Thambi” or younger brother, Vijay also warned rivals against attempts to destabilise the government.
“I will not do wrong and will not let others with me do wrong either. If anyone has wrong ideas, delete them right away,” he said.
Vijay Thanks Alliance Partners
The Chief Minister thanked leaders from parties that supported the TVK in crossing the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.
He expressed gratitude to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal and Congress strategist Praveen Chakravarty.
Vijay also acknowledged support from leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Communist Party of India.
Along with Vijay, nine TVK leaders took oath as ministers. Leaders from Congress, CPI(M), VCK and Indian Union Muslim League who supported the government may be inducted later after discussions over portfolios are completed.
