Tirupati, housing the largest Urban Local Body (ULB) in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district, has clinched the 8th position among cleanest cities with a population of over 1 lakh in the Swachh Survekshan 2023 rankings.

The Tirupati Municipal Corporation (TMC) has showcased its unwavering commitment to cleanliness, earning a prestigious 5-star Garbage Free City (GFC) and Water plus rating, thus emerging as the cleanest State capital in the nation.

Boasting a robust waste management system, Tirupati manages approximately 115 Tons Per Day (TPD) of Wet Waste, 15 TPD of Food Waste, 61 TPD of Dry Waste & Recyclables, 1 TPD of Domestic Hazardous Waste, and 2 TPD of Plastic Waste, along with an additional 25 Tons per day of Construction and Demolition waste.

The city ensures scientific processing of all waste collected at respective waste processing and management facilities, with nearly 1000 sanitation workers dedicated to maintaining cleanliness.

Implementing a comprehensive waste collection strategy, Tirupati achieves 100% door-to-door waste collection, covering every gate with essential infrastructure like Ghanta Gaddis and auto tippers equipped for efficient segregation of Plastic and Non-Plastic waste.

Utilizing an Online Waste Management System (OWMS) with RFID technology for real-time tracking of waste collection, coupled with continuous monitoring and dedicated sanitation efforts, the city boasts a successful 100% collection rate from all gates.

Emphasizing decentralized waste processing, Tirupati eases the burden on centralized plants, with a focus on processing wet waste in markets and gardens.

With 6 decentralized waste processing facilities and 3 Bio Chest machines, the city efficiently manages waste, including recyclable plastic waste.

To further enhance plastic waste processing, Tirupati is constructing a permanent shed at the integrated waste management facility, aiming to extract maximum value from plastic waste.

Moreover, the city’s innovative initiatives include a Washing Plant and Agglomerator Machine for recycling plastic waste, alongside a Bio-methanation plant that converts organic waste into bio-methane gas, contributing to sustainable energy solutions.

Partnering with Pro Enviro Solutions, Tirupati has established a Construction and Demolition waste management facility, utilizing processed materials for developmental works, thus exemplifying a circular economy model.

With the successful remediation of the Ramapuram dumpsite and reclamation of reclaimed land, Tirupati’s commitment to effective waste management and inclusive sanitation cements its position as a trailblazer in the Swachhata initiative.
