Shimla, 3rd Oct. Full service on the Kalka-Shimla railway track (a UNESCO World Heritage site) resumed on Monday. Over the last two days, a trial run between the two stations (to and fro) was done.

After around three months, train services on the heritage railway have been fully restored. Following the state’s heavy rain, the track was damaged in over 175 spots, and train services were discontinued on July 9.

On September 20, the track from Kalka to Solan returned to service. The service was later restored up to Tara Devi in Shimla.

A trial run from Shimla to Kalka was undertaken in the morning. The train resumed full operation in the afternoon, departing Kalka at 12.30 pm and arriving in Shimla at 5.30 pm. The passengers, who were largely tourists, looked overjoyed.

“The train services on the Kalka-Shimla track have completely resumed,” said Naveen Kumar, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) of the Railways, Ambala division. The train will have four separate departure times beginning on Tuesday.”

According to a hotelier, the return of rail services on the heritage track will promote tourism in the capital city.
