Two Killed, 20 Injured as Howrah-Mumbai Mail Derails in Jharkhand

Jamshedpur, 30th July. Two persons were killed and 20 others injured when at least 18 coaches of the Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailed early Tuesday in Jharkhand’s Seraikela-Kharsawan district, officials reported.

The accident occurred at 3:45 AM near Barabamboo, approximately 80 km from Jamshedpur, under the Chakradharpur Division of the South Eastern Railway (SER). The derailment involved 18 of the 22 coaches of the 12810 Howrah-Mumbai Mail, including 16 passenger coaches, one power car, and one pantry car.

SER spokesperson Om Prakash Charan confirmed another derailment of a goods train nearby but stated it was unclear if the two incidents were related.

West Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner Kuldeep Chaudhary, who is at the accident site, reported that the Howrah-Mumbai Mail struck the stationary goods train. Rescue operations are underway, with a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team dispatched to the scene. Injured passengers have been given medical aid in Barabamboo and transported to Chakradharpur for further treatment. A relief train has arrived for evacuation, and buses are being arranged for additional transportation.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has directed officials to expedite relief efforts. The South Eastern Railway has opened helpline numbers for affected passengers, and several trains on the route have been cancelled or diverted. The accident occurred in the Potobeda area of the Kharsawan block in Seraikela-Kharsawan district.
