Two New Judges Take Oath, SC Regains Full Strength Of 34

New Delhi, 13th Feb. Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud administered the oath of office to two new Supreme Court judges on Monday, bringing the top court’s total sanctioned strength to 34.

During a ceremony held at the Supreme Court grounds, Justices Rajesh Bindal and Aravind Kumar were sworn in.

The number of judges on the Supreme Court has increased to 34 with the appointment of two new judges.

Before being appointed to the Supreme Court, Justice Bindal served as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, and Justice Kumar served as Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court.

On January 31, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended their names for appointment as top court judges.

On February 6, Justices Pankaj Mithal, Sanjay Karol, P V Sanjay Kumar, Ahsanuddin Amanullah, and Manoj Misra were sworn in as Supreme Court judges by the CJI.

Since October 11, 2021, Justice Bindal has served as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.

Born on April 16, 1961, Justice Bindal received his LL.B. from Kurukshetra University in 1985 and began his legal career in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in September of that year.

On March 22, 2006, he was appointed to the Punjab and Haryana High Court as a judge.

According to information on the Allahabad High Court’s website, Justice Bindal presided over around 80,000 cases during his tenure in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

On November 19, 2018, he was appointed as the acting Chief Justice of the common high court for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Union Territory of Ladakh after being transferred to the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

On January 5, 2021, Justice Bindal was sworn in as a judge of the Calcutta High Court and was appointed to perform the duties of the Chief Justice of that court with effect from April 29, 2021.

Justice Kumar had been the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court since October 13, 2021, prior to his elevation to the Supreme Court.

Born on July 14, 1962, he was enrolled as an advocate in 1987.

He was appointed to the Karnataka High Court as an additional central government standing counsel in 1999.

In 2002, he was appointed to the Regional Direct Taxes Advisory Committee, and in 2005, he was appointed as an Assistant Solicitor General of India.

On June 26, 2009, Justice Kumar was appointed as an additional judge of the Karnataka High Court. On December 7, 2012, he was appointed as a permanent judge.
