New Delhi/London, 13th April: The British Sikh Association has written to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, raising concerns over the representation of Indian history in school textbooks and urging greater inclusion of Sikh contributions.
In a detailed letter dated February 18, 2026, the association expressed strong views on how historical narratives have been presented, particularly highlighting what it described as an overemphasis on Mughal rulers while underrepresenting the struggles and sacrifices of Sikh Gurus and other communities.
The letter, signed by Chairman Lord Rami Ranger, stressed that Sikh history plays a crucial role in shaping India’s identity and should be adequately reflected in educational material.

Call for Balanced Historical Narrative
The association argued that India’s history remains incomplete without proper acknowledgment of the contributions of Sikh Gurus, Sahibs, and warriors. It cited historical events involving figures like Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh, as well as the sacrifices of Sikh communities during periods of conflict.
It also referred to the role of the Sikh Empire under Maharaja Ranjit Singh and military leaders like Hari Singh Nalwa in safeguarding India’s frontiers.
Appeal for Curriculum Changes
The organisation urged the government to ensure that future generations are taught a more comprehensive and balanced account of history, including the contributions of Marathas, Rajputs, and Sikhs.
The letter emphasised that awareness of these historical struggles is essential for understanding India’s cultural and civilisational heritage.
Broader Context
The communication also referenced ongoing debates around history curriculum reforms in India, particularly regarding the representation of different periods and communities.
A copy of the letter was also marked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, indicating the importance the organisation attaches to the issue.
The development comes amid continued discussions on revisiting historical narratives in textbooks, with various groups advocating for a more inclusive representation of India’s past.
