Veteran Marxist Leader N Sankaraiah Passes Away at 102

Chennai, 16th Nov. N Sankaraiah, a freedom fighter and esteemed CPM leader, passed away early this morning at a private hospital in Chennai. He was 102 years old and had been receiving treatment for viral fever.

Sankaraiah was born in the coastal town of Tuticorin and his life was characterized by resilience and unwavering dedication to the cause of freedom. During the freedom struggle in 1941, he was imprisoned for 18 months as a student leader at the American College in Madurai. In total, he spent 8 years of his life behind bars.

Transitioning from the battlefield of independence to the political arena, Sankaraiah served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) on three occasions.

The ruling DMK government recognized his contributions by awarding him the prestigious Thagaisal Thamizhar Award. However, Sankaraiah chose to return the awarded sum of 10 lakhs to the government.

In a recent development, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi declined to sign the file recommending an honorary doctorate for Sankaraiah, despite approval from Madurai Kamaraj University’s Senate and Syndicate.
