Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Assumes Office as Vice Chief of Naval Staff

Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, AVSM, VSM, took charge as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff on May 1, 2024. In a solemn ceremony, the distinguished officer paid tribute to the valiant souls who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation, laying a floral wreath at the National War Memorial.

Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, Vice Admiral Swaminathan is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare. He boasts a stellar educational background, having graduated from prestigious institutions such as the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla; the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham, United Kingdom; the College of Naval Warfare, Karanja; and the United States Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, USA.

Recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal, Vice Admiral Swaminathan has served in various operational, staff, and training roles throughout his illustrious career. He has commanded missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, missile corvette INS Kulish, guided missile destroyer INS Mysore, and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.

As Rear Admiral, he played pivotal roles as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at Headquarters, Southern Naval Command, Kochi, and as Flag Officer Sea Training. He also served as the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Fleet, and as Advisor, Offshore Security and Defence to the Government of India.

Promoted to Vice Admiral, he served as Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command and Controller of Personnel Services at NHQ. Prior to assuming the role of Vice Chief of Naval Staff, he served as Chief of Personnel at NHQ.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan holds impressive educational qualifications, including degrees from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi; King’s College, London; Mumbai University; and a PhD in International Studies from Mumbai University.
