Chennai, 10th May: Vijay on Sunday took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, marking a historic political shift in the state with the formation of the first government outside the DMK-AIADMK fold in nearly six decades.
The 51-year-old actor-turned-politician was sworn in at a packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai in the presence of his parents SA Chandrasekhar and Shobha, actor Trisha Krishnan and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.
Nine leaders of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam also took oath as ministers in Vijay’s cabinet.
The ministers include veteran leader KA Sengottaiyan, strategist Aadhav Arjuna, former BJP functionary CTR Nirmal Kumar, TVK General Secretary Bussy Anand, television personality RajMohan, dentist-turned-politician KT Prabhu, former IRS officer Arunraaj, Mylapore MLA P Venkataramanan and 28-year-old S Keerthana.
How Vijay Reached the Majority Mark
The TVK, formed only two years ago, won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly in its electoral debut but fell short of the majority mark of 118.
Vijay held several rounds of talks with political parties and met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar multiple times to prove majority support.
The Congress, which has five MLAs, first extended support to TVK. Later, the Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) also backed Vijay with two MLAs each.
The breakthrough came after DMK allies Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Indian Union Muslim League announced unconditional support, taking the coalition tally to 120 MLAs.
Following discussions at Lok Bhavan, the Governor invited Vijay to form the government. The new Chief Minister has been asked to prove majority on the floor of the Assembly on or before May 13.
From ‘Thalapathy’ to Chief Minister
Born on June 22, 1974, in Chennai, Vijay started his acting career as a child artiste in the 1984 film ‘Vetri’, directed by his father.
He debuted as a lead actor in ‘Naalaiya Theerpu’ in 1992 and later earned the title ‘Thalapathy’ after the release of ‘Rasigan’ in 1994.
Over the years, Vijay delivered blockbuster films including Thuppakki, Kaththi, Mersal, Bigil and Leo.
He entered politics with the launch of TVK in 2024 and has now become Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister after a dramatic electoral breakthrough.
