VP Dhankhar Warns Against Unilateral Actions at Sea, Calls for Rule-Based Maritime Order

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar delivered a cautionary message today, highlighting the potential consequences of unilateral actions and disregard for international law at sea.

Speaking at the Indian Maritime Seminar (MILAN 2024) organized by the Indian Navy in Visakhapatnam, Dhankhar emphasized the critical importance of adhering to a rule-based maritime order to safeguard the stability and security of the entire region.

Dhankhar underscored the escalating security challenges in the maritime domain, characterizing them as having new and menacing dimensions with the potential to disrupt peace and unsettle vital supply chains. He stressed the interconnectedness of global trade and commerce with the seas, emphasizing that disruptions in supply chains can have far-reaching implications for ordinary people’s lives.

Recognizing the oceans’ significance as pathways to connect nations, the Vice-President emphasized India’s commitment to respecting boundaries and fostering a rule-based maritime order. He reiterated the imperative of adhering to international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), for peaceful coexistence and sustainable use of maritime resources.

In light of the theme of MILAN 2024 – “Partners Across Oceans: Collaboration, Synergy, Growth”, Dhankhar called for nations to come together, share experiences, and develop collaborative strategies to ensure the safety, security, and sustainability of oceans.

Highlighting the historical importance of oceans in India’s heritage, the Vice-President referenced the great Indian Epic of Ramayana and its enduring influence on South East Asian culture. He emphasized the value of shared past in fostering diplomatic dialogue and cooperation among nations.

Commending the Indian Navy for its professionalism and maritime excellence, Shri Dhankhar reaffirmed India’s commitment to upholding principles of freedom of navigation, promoting regional stability, and addressing emerging challenges in the maritime domain. He emphasized that India’s maritime strength will be instrumental in its journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.

The International Maritime Seminar of MILAN 2024 witnessed participation from delegates and warships of several countries, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in ensuring maritime security and stability.
