Mathura, 10th April: At least six people were killed and several others went missing after a tourist boat capsized in the Yamuna river in Vrindavan on Friday afternoon, officials said.
District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh confirmed the deaths, stating that all passengers on board were tourists from Punjab.
“Six bodies have been recovered so far. Around 16 to 17 people have been rescued safely. Efforts are ongoing to trace those missing,” the official said, adding that the boat was carrying over two dozen people.
Rescue operations are in full swing, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force deployed at the site, along with nearly 50 local divers assisting in search efforts.
Eyewitnesses said the boat began to sway violently midstream due to strong gusts of wind. The vessel reportedly lost balance, accelerated uncontrollably, and collided with a pontoon bridge before overturning.
Police and local administration have cordoned off the area, with divers focusing on deeper sections of the river to locate missing passengers.
Senior officials, including the district magistrate and superintendent of police, are present at the site, monitoring the rescue operation.
Authorities have not ruled out further casualties as search efforts continue.
