During a meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday, West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari sought action against the Mamata Banerjee government, alleging diversion of central funds. Adhikari, also the leader of opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, raised concerns about significant corruption prevailing under the TMC rule in the state.

Addressing reporters in the Parliament Complex post the meeting, Adhikari highlighted the misuse of funds, stating, “Massive corruption is happening in West Bengal.” He emphasized that central funds meant for development projects, as per the 15th Finance Commission’s recommendations, were being misappropriated.

Adhikari claimed that the state government was exploiting a provision related to electricity bill payments, using central funds to cover bills for various government offices. He insisted that such practices must cease immediately to prevent further diversion of funds.

Citing a CAG report indicating corruption amounting to Rs 2 lakh crore, Adhikari urged Sitharaman to intervene. He emphasized the necessity of conducting audits on the utilization of funds allocated to Bengal, asserting that it was imperative before any further disbursement from the Centre.

Sitharaman reportedly assured Adhikari of action upon receipt of a formal complaint. She urged him to submit a detailed complaint as the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, promising an investigation into the matter. Adhikari expressed his contentment with Sitharaman’s response, stating that appropriate action would be taken if the claims were substantiated.

The meeting between Sitharaman and Adhikari highlights the ongoing political tensions surrounding the utilization of central funds in West Bengal, signaling potential repercussions for the state government if allegations of fund diversion are proven true.
