GG News Bureau

Kolkata, 23rd Oct. CBI has arrested four officials from the Regional Passport Office in Kolkata for their involvement in a scam where passports were issued to Nepalese citizens using fake documents.

The arrested officials, Uttam Kumar, Debasis Bhattacharjee, Nishit Baran Saha, and Manish Kumar Gupta, were presented before a special court in Gangtok and have been remanded to CBI custody until October 25.

Previously, two RPO officials and four agents were also arrested in connection with the case.

The officials were part of a racket that processed 60 passport applications for Nepalese citizens using forged Indian identity cards, in exchange for bribes.

Middlemen collected the applications and prepared fake identity cards, which were then submitted at the Passport Laghu Seva Kendra in Gangtok.

The agents, along with passport department officials, managed police verification and postal officials.

The passports were delivered to the agents, who would personally hand them over to the applicants and collect payments, which were then distributed among officials in Gangtok, Siliguri, and Kolkata.
