Amidst a concerning escalation in attacks targeting Indian and Indian American students across the United States, the White House has promised decisive action to prevent such incidents. John Kirby, the Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council, made the announcement, underlining the administration’s unwavering commitment to combating violence based on race, gender, religion, or any other discriminatory factor.

Addressing reporters, Kirby condemned the attacks and reiterated President Joe Biden’s dedication to ensuring the safety of all students. He stated, “There is no excuse for violence… That’s just unacceptable here in the United States.” Kirby highlighted ongoing collaborative efforts between the federal government, state, and local authorities to prevent and address such attacks.

The statement comes in the wake of several tragic incidents involving Indian American students. Vivek Saini, a part-time worker, lost his life in an attack by a drug addict in Lithonia, Georgia, while Syed Mazahir Ali, a student at Indiana Wesleyan University, was assaulted in February. Additionally, the deaths of Akul Dhawan and Neel Acharya, attributed to heavy drinking and exposure to low temperatures, as well as the recent loss of Shreyas Reddy Benigeri in Ohio, have sparked concerns and calls for action.

Indian American community leader Ajay Jain Bhutoria expressed deep concern over these tragedies and emphasized the urgent need for enhanced safety measures for students in the US. He urged college authorities and local law enforcement to promptly address safety challenges to ensure the well-being of Indian students studying in the country.

Bhutoria underscored the shared concerns of parents and families in India, stressing the importance of addressing safety issues and implementing improved support systems. He called for unity within the Indian American community in advocating for enhanced safety measures to prevent further tragedies. As concerns grow, the White House’s assurance of action provides hope for greater security and protection for Indian students in the United States.
