Women Shine in Indian Politics: Victories of Leading Female Candidates in 2024 Lok Sabha Elections

New Delhi, 5th June. In the recently concluded general elections, women candidates across various political parties showcased their strength by securing victories in their respective constituencies, contributing to the growing representation of women in Indian politics.

Among the notable winners were Congress’ Kumari Selja, who triumphed in Haryana’s Sirsa Lok Sabha seat with an impressive margin of over 2.5 lakh votes. Additionally, Bansuri Swaraj, the daughter of late BJP stalwart Sushma Swaraj, emerged victorious in the New Delhi constituency, securing a lead of 78,370 votes.

Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut, contesting for the BJP, clinched a landslide victory in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, defeating Congress leader Vikramaditya Singh by 74,755 votes. Another veteran actor, Hema Malini, retained her seat in Mathura, garnering 5.1 lakh votes.

Samajwadi Party leader Dimple Yadav, the wife of Akhilesh Yadav, comfortably retained the Mainpuri seat, triumphing over her BJP rival Jayveer Singh by a margin of 2,21,639 votes. Misa Bharti, the daughter of RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, emerged victorious against Union minister Ram Kripal Yadav in Bihar’s Pataliputra by a margin of 85,174 votes.

Other significant wins included Trinamool Congress candidate Mahua Moitra in West Bengal’s Krishnanagar seat and DMK’s Kanimozhi Karunanidhi in Thoothukkudi.

Young candidates Priya Saroj and Iqra Choudhary also made their mark by securing victories in Machhlishahr and Kairana seats, respectively.

While over 30 women candidates emerged victorious, the overall count was lower compared to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, where 78 women candidates had won seats. Nonetheless, their success underscores the increasing presence of women in the Indian political landscape.
