New Delhi, 7th Feb.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury has slammed the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal as “anti-democratic,” stating that it contradicts the principles of the Constitution. Yechury voiced disagreement with the committee’s terms of reference, arguing that the presumption of its feasibility is flawed.

He emphasized that ‘One Nation, One Election’ undermines democracy and federalism, particularly when a government loses majority support in the legislature.

Yechury, part of the CPI(M) delegation to Delhi, highlighted the proposal’s adverse effects on democratic principles. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), represented by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s delegation, also expressed concerns over the proposal during their visit to Delhi. Notably, Banerjee abstained from the meeting, citing an urgent matter.

The High-Level Committee on One Nation One Election convened on February 2, chaired by former President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.
