Zoya Akhtar, a six-time Filmfare award-winning director, expressed her admiration for the iconic Archie comic during an ‘In Conversation’ session titled ‘The Archies – Made in India’ at the 54th IFFI in Goa. She explained that the goal of The Archies film is to capture the innocence, naivety, and friendship portrayed in the comic and present it as a two-hour narrative for today’s young generation.

Adapting a comic story into a film presented its own challenges, said Zoya Akhtar.

She emphasized the difficulty of capturing the essence and subtleties of the Archie comic, given its immense popularity, while also creating a compelling cinematic experience for the audience. She added, “The Archie comic was a significant part of my childhood. The characters are iconic and beloved worldwide. Creating a film that evokes nostalgia for the generation that grew up with the comic, while also resonating with today’s young adults, offers a unique experience in scriptwriting.”

Jon Goldwater, CEO of Archie Comics, expressed pride in the fact that the characters and stories of Archie Comics have resonated with fans globally, including in India, for over 50 years. He commended the filmmakers for maintaining the integrity and authenticity of each fictional character throughout the film. The Archie team in New York is immensely proud of the final product.

Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, Director of Content at Netflix India, described this as a significant moment for Netflix India, as they are producing the first-ever feature film based on the Archie comics. She emphasized that the film is not only a cultural production from India but also has the potential to connect with a global audience.

The Archies is an Indian adaptation of the iconic comic series ‘The Archies.’ It is set in the fictional hilly town of Riverdale in 1960s India, where a group of teenagers grapple with love, heartache, friendship, and rebellion. The musical film is scheduled to be released on Netflix on December 7, 2023.
