New Delhi, 8th April: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an investment of ₹14,105.83 crore for the construction of the Kalai-II Hydro Electric Project in Arunachal Pradesh.
The 1200 MW project will be developed on the Lohit river in Anjaw district and is expected to be completed within 78 months. It is projected to generate around 4852.95 million units (MU) of electricity annually.
The project will be implemented through a joint venture between THDC India Limited and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh.
As the first hydroelectric project in the Lohit Basin, it is expected to strengthen power availability in the region, assist in peak demand management and support grid stability at the national level.
The Centre will provide ₹599.88 crore as budgetary support for enabling infrastructure, including roads, bridges and transmission lines, along with ₹750 crore as central financial assistance towards the state’s equity share.
The state government will receive 12% free power from the project, along with an additional 1% earmarked for the Local Area Development Fund (LADF).
Officials said the project will also lead to infrastructure development in Namsai and Anjaw districts, including the construction of about 29 kilometres of roads and bridges, benefiting local communities.
In addition, the initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities, compensation benefits and CSR-driven development for the local population.
