New Delhi, 12th May: Four men have been arrested after two women from Assam and Bihar alleged they were assaulted, molested and subjected to racist abuse in Delhi’s Kalkaji area, police said.
According to the victims, the incident began when a group of men allegedly approached them aggressively and started provoking them before physically attacking them.
One of the women alleged that her clothes were torn during the assault while the accused also used racist slurs against them.
The women further claimed that the attackers later returned with more men and assaulted them with a bamboo stick while they were trying to escape.
“Those men came really close to us, and when my friend pushed him, one of them slapped her,” one of the victims said.
Police said videos recorded by the women played a crucial role in identifying the accused.
According to officials, one of the clips allegedly shows a group of men hurling abuses while appearing to be under the influence of alcohol.
“In the footage, one of the men can be heard saying, ‘Bhai ye toh video bana rahi hai, kya karey?’ after which abusive language was used,” a police officer said.
The women alleged that several bystanders witnessed the incident but failed to intervene.
“Some people were watching and laughing, but no one helped us,” one of the victims said.
The women said the trauma continued even after the incident ended.
“I haven’t been able to eat or sleep since the incident. My entire body is in pain. I’m worried about my mental health,” one of the women told PTI.
The woman from Assam said she wanted safety for women who are often unable to speak up after such incidents.
“I am bold, and I want to continue being bold, but I also want to feel safe,” she said.
Police said both women were taken to All India Institute of Medical Sciences for medical examination after officers reached the scene.
An FIR was registered at Kalkaji Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including assault, molestation, stalking, criminal intimidation and wrongful restraint.
Investigators examined CCTV footage from the area and questioned eight individuals during the investigation.
The four arrested accused have been identified as Md Fahad, Md Savej, Md Arif and Aman alias Mohd Faheem alias Kala.
Police said further investigation into the matter is underway.
