Tehri, 23rd April: At least eight people were killed and two others injured after a utility vehicle fell into a deep gorge in Tehri district on Thursday, officials said.
The accident occurred in the Chamba area when the driver of a Bolero Camper lost control of the vehicle, which was carrying around 9–10 passengers. The victims, residents of Thyoldhar village in Ghansali, were returning from Haridwar after attending the last rites of a villager.
Rescue teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police and fire services, rushed to the spot following an alert through the Dial 112 emergency service. Eight bodies have been recovered, while the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
District Magistrate Nitika Khandelwal said rescue operations are ongoing to ensure all occupants are accounted for.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the recovery of the injured.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami termed the incident tragic and directed officials to ensure prompt and proper medical care for the injured. He also prayed for strength for the affected families.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
