Chennai, 10th May: Newly sworn-in Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Sunday announced free electricity, action against drugs and measures for women’s safety as the first major decisions of his government.
Addressing supporters after taking oath, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief began his speech with the phrase “En Nenjil Kudiyirukkum” — meaning “who lives in my heart” — a line he has frequently used while addressing fans during his film career and political campaigns.
In his first official orders as Chief Minister, Vijay announced 200 units of free electricity for consumers, formation of a special task force to curb the drug menace and creation of a dedicated force along with a helpline for women’s safety.
He said his government would continue to focus on education, healthcare and water-related issues while assuring support for farmers and fishermen.
“Farmers and fishermen will be taken care of. All will be good,” Vijay said.
‘I Know Poverty and Hunger’
In an emotional speech, Vijay said he had risen from humble beginnings and understood the struggles of ordinary people.
“An assistant director’s son has now become a chief minister. I know poverty and hunger. I did not come from a royal family. Many people humiliated me. I am like your son, your brother, your younger sibling,” he said.
The Chief Minister also promised a corruption-free administration and accused the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government of leaving behind a projected debt of ₹10 lakh crore by March 2027.
“We will not take a single penny from people’s funds and we will not allow anyone to loot the state,” Vijay said.
Promising a “new era of real, secular and social justice”, Vijay thanked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress strategist Praveen Chakravarty, CPI(M) leader MA Baby and alliance partners for supporting the TVK-led coalition.
Coalition Crossed Majority Mark After Intense Talks
The TVK emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly elections but initially fell short of the 118-seat majority mark in the 234-member House.
The party later secured support from Congress, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Indian Union Muslim League, taking the alliance tally to 120 MLAs.
The development paved the way for Tamil Nadu’s first non-DMK and non-AIADMK government in nearly 60 years.
Later, DMK spokesperson A Saravanan claimed former Chief Minister MK Stalin had persuaded alliance partners like the VCK to support TVK to avoid a constitutional crisis.
Apart from Vijay, nine ministers also took oath, including Aadhav Arjuna, CTR Nirmal Kumar, Bussy Anand, Raj Mohan, KT Prabhu, Arunraaj, P Venkataramanan and S Keerthana.
The Vijay-led government will now face a floor test in the Assembly before May 13.
