Addressing students and faculty members, the President said Sikkim has a distinct identity because of its natural beauty, biodiversity and cultural heritage. She described Mount Kanchenjunga as a priceless gift of nature and said the people of the state have shown a deep commitment towards environmental conservation.
The President praised Sikkim for becoming India’s first fully organic state in 2016 and said the state had demonstrated that development and environmental protection can progress together. She said efforts such as reducing plastic use, promoting organic farming and protecting nature serve as an inspiration for the entire country.
Murmu also congratulated the government and people of Sikkim for achieving the status of a fully literate state, calling it a matter of pride for the nation.
Highlighting the importance of the Northeast in India’s growth journey, the President said the region’s youth possess immense talent and can play a key role in inclusive national development. The President said Sikkim University carries a special responsibility to preserve the region’s language, culture and environment alongside its role as a centre for education and research. She appreciated the university’s efforts to combine modern education with local traditions, ecological awareness and social responsibility.
Calling education a powerful tool for self-reliance, Murmu advised students to believe in their capabilities, learn from others, work collaboratively and set clear goals for the future. She expressed confidence that students would contribute to the vision of a developed India by 2047 with values of efficiency, equity and sustainability.
Earlier in the day, the President flagged off the ‘Ama Didi Bahini Bus Sewa’ — pink buses dedicated for women — along with resource recovery vehicles for solid waste management in Gangtok.
