New Delhi, 1st June: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep grief over the demise of legendary playback singer Suman Kalyanpur, who passed away in Mumbai at the age of 89, marking the end of an era in Indian music.

In a condolence message, the Prime Minister said he was anguished by her passing and noted that her melodious voice and soulful renditions enriched Bharat’s cultural landscape for decades.

“Anguished by the passing of the popular singer Suman Kalyanpur Ji. Her melodious voice and soulful renditions enriched our cultural world. Through her songs, she created a special place among music lovers and admirers of Indian cinema. Condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti,” Modi said in a post on X.

Suman Kalyanpur passed away at her residence in Mumbai on Sunday evening due to age-related ailments, according to reports. She was 89.

Widely regarded as one of the most graceful voices of Hindi cinema’s golden era, Kalyanpur captivated generations with her soft, expressive singing style. Her voice was often compared with that of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, though she carved out a distinct identity through a remarkable body of work spanning several decades.

Born as Suman Hemmadi in 1937, she sang in multiple Indian languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Assamese, Punjabi and Bhojpuri. Over her long career, she delivered numerous memorable songs that remain popular among music lovers.

Among her most celebrated songs are Aajkal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche, Na Na Karte Pyaar, Tumne Pukara Aur Hum Chale Aaye and Mera Pyar Bhi Tu Hai, many of which became timeless classics in Indian cinema.

Kalyanpur was honoured with several prestigious recognitions during her lifetime, including the Padma Bhushan in 2023 for her contribution to Indian music.

Tributes poured in from across the political and entertainment spectrum following her demise. Members of the music fraternity remembered her as one of the last great voices of an unforgettable era in Indian playback singing.
