Kolkata, 25th June: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed grief over the loss of lives in the warehouse collapse in Kolkata and announced financial assistance for the victims’ families from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister described the incident as saddening and said the Centre stood with those affected by the tragedy.
An ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh will be provided from the PMNRF to the next of kin of each person who lost their life in the collapse, while ₹50,000 will be given to every injured victim.
“The mishap in Kolkata yesterday is saddening. An ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each will be given from PMNRF to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the mishap. The injured would be given ₹50,000. The state government is working round the clock to ensure that those affected receive all possible assistance,” the Prime Minister said.
The announcement came a day after an under-construction warehouse collapsed in Kolkata, killing at least five people and injuring several others.
Earlier in the day, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari suspended work on all under-construction commercial projects approved during the previous government until July 31 and ordered a statewide safety audit. Preliminary findings indicated possible flaws in the sanctioned building plan of the collapsed structure.
Rescue operations involving the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Kolkata Police, Fire Services and civil defence personnel continued as authorities worked to clear debris and assist the injured.
Officials said a detailed technical investigation into the cause of the collapse is underway, while the state government is expected to announce additional compensation and legal action after receiving the final inquiry report.
